How to Search Civil Dockets
Pierce County LINX is the main public index for Superior and District civil cases. Pick the court first. Superior offers Civil, Domestic, Probate/Guardianship, and Tax Warrant/Judgment choices. District Civil includes small claims, name changes, protection matters, and qualifying injury, property, or contract disputes. Search by cause number when possible. A name route uses last and first name fields.
Compare the court, case type, year, and party roles before relying on a match. Similar names can appear. The Washington Courts statewide portal can help identify the court, but it warns that status and document links may not be complete or current. Use that result to find the cause number, then verify the Pierce County civil docket with LINX or the clerk.
- Choose Superior or District and select the civil category that fits.
- Enter the cause number, or use an indexed party name and year range.
- Confirm the court, filing date, subtype, and party roles.
- Read filing, service, motion, setting, order, and judgment entries in date order.
- Request the public document from the responsible clerk when the index is not enough.
Pierce Civil Courts Compared
Pierce County Superior Court has general jurisdiction over major civil disputes and keeps domestic, probate, and guardianship cases in distinct search categories. Pierce County District Court has limited civil jurisdiction under RCW 3.66.020, subject to statutory exclusions, and also hears small claims and named protection matters. A city court filing is separate.
| Court | Typical matter | Record holder |
|---|---|---|
| Superior | Major civil, domestic, probate, guardianship | Pierce County Clerk |
| District | Limited civil, small claims, protection matters | District Court |
| Municipal | City matter within local jurisdiction | Named city court |
The court named on the filing or hearing notice controls where the public record is requested.
What a Civil Docket Shows
A Pierce County civil docket header may show cause number, subtype, filing date, status, assigned judge or commissioner, department, courtroom, and next event. Party rows state roles. Event entries can track service, an answer, motion, case schedule, mediation, trial, dismissal, judgment, satisfaction, enforcement, and appeal. The filed order supplies the controlling text.
| Cause number | The court identifier and best search key. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff, petitioner, defendant, respondent, and counsel roles. |
| Filings | Complaint, answer, service return, declarations, and exhibits. |
| Events | Motions, schedules, mediation, trial, dismissal, and appeal. |
| Outcome | Judgment, agreed order, default, satisfaction, or transfer as entered. |
Pierce Civil Event Terms
Civil labels often describe process, not the result. A case schedule sets deadlines. A motion asks for a ruling. A judgment records a court decision. A satisfaction concerns fulfillment of a judgment. Service shows that papers were delivered through a recognized method.
- Case schedule
- The court timeline for required steps.
- Motion
- A request for a ruling in the pending case.
- Judgment
- A decision entered in the record.
- Satisfaction
- An entry about fulfillment of a judgment.
Read the linked order when available. A short event label may not say whether relief was granted, denied, or partly granted.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
LINX describes Superior Civil as including unlawful detainers, commercial litigation, collection, and injury matters. The broader docket includes property disputes. Domestic and Probate/Guardianship have their own checkboxes because procedure and privacy differ. District Civil includes small claims, name changes, protection matters, and qualifying injury, property, or contract disputes.
- Commercial, contract, collection, injury, and property disputes
- Small claims and civil matters within District limits
- Domestic cases such as dissolution and separation
- Probate estates, wills, and guardianship matters
- Protection-order matters with added safety limits
Pierce Older Civil Files
Pierce County says Superior documents filed on or after January 1, 2002 can generally be viewed or bought through LINX when available. Documents from January 1991 through December 2001 require the Scan Document Request Form and are generally added to LINX within two business days. For pre-1991 material, call the Pierce County Clerk with the cause number or litigant name.
Current files may also be requested in person, by mail, or through “Purchase Copies” on a LINX case page. A mailed request must name the requester, cause number, and exact documents, with the payment and return-envelope items the clerk specifies. Call for the exact amount. District Court has a separate request route and cannot supply Superior or Juvenile records.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A civil setting should identify its date, start time, department or judicial officer, courtroom or remote mode, and hearing type. LINX offers civil calendar views by judge or attorney. A case schedule can set deadlines well before trial, while a motion setting deals with one request. Commissioner calendars are common in family and probate work.
LINX calendars regenerate about every two hours and can change without notice. Confirm a date with the assigned department, clerk by phone, clerk’s counter, counsel, or courthouse posting. The Pierce County court calendar explains the statewide Find My Court Date route too.
Pierce Civil Filing Context
The official 2025 report lists 13,987 Pierce County Superior civil filings. The notes say the category includes clerk-filed matters and, from July 27, 2025, NFE matters. Some sealed cases are treated differently, and Pierce data comes from LINX.
The number is not a count of unique parties, pending cases, judgments, or outcomes.
Pierce Civil Copy Choices
A plain copy reproduces a public filing. A certified copy carries the clerk’s seal and certification. Pierce County’s current schedule lists certified copies at $5 for the first page and $1 for each added page, while the June 2026 notice sets non-certified copies at $0.50 per page. Verify the live schedule before ordering.
Choose certification only when the receiving body requires it. Pierce County warns that the Social Security Administration does not accept electronically certified documents. Ask the recipient what form it accepts before paying for the wrong product.
Pierce Domestic Docket Boundaries
Domestic cases can have a public case index alongside restricted financial, health, or child-related filings. Probate and guardianship cases can also combine public events with protected reports. An available docket row does not make every attached document open.
Use the Domestic or Probate/Guardianship LINX category rather than forcing those matters into the broad Civil checkbox. When the portal marks a filing sealed or restricted, preserve that label and ask the clerk about the governing rule or review procedure. General Rule 22 supplies special family-law access protections, while General Rule 31 controls court-record access more broadly. The Washington access brochure also identifies adoption, mental-health commitment, some paternity records, confidential name changes, and juvenile non-offender records as restricted categories. A public case caption therefore cannot be used to infer the contents of a protected filing. If a public order refers to sealed financial or health material, report only the open order and its stated restriction. The clerk can identify the proper motion or review route when access is denied.
Pierce Civil Request Details
A focused record request moves faster than a broad demand. Give the clerk the cause number, court, party roles, and exact filing title or date. State whether a plain or certified copy is needed and choose an offered delivery method. District requests may ask for name, date of birth, incident date, urgency, and preferred email delivery.
For Superior mail requests, include a self-addressed stamped envelope and the approved advance payment. The clerk does not accept personal checks for the described transactions. Call before mailing when the page count or total is unknown.
Pierce Civil E-Filing Limits
LINX supports Pierce Superior electronic filing and related account functions, but access level and document services can depend on the account. District Court’s August 2026 soft launch is gradual, begins with selected no-fee filings, and keeps traditional filing open. A portal search is not proof that every submitted document was accepted.
After filing, retain the confirmation or rejection notice and check the docket. Portrait PDF and document-type requirements apply during the District rollout. Current local rules, effective September 1, 2026, should control over an older instruction sheet.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
General Rule 31 governs Washington court-case access. Public material may include an unsealed index, docket entries, orders, and judgments, but a public case can contain sealed exhibits. General Rule 22 protects specified family-law records. Adoption, some paternity and mental-health material, confidential name changes, juvenile non-offender records, and sealed records may be restricted.
Courthouse inspection of a public record is generally free. Copies, certification, scans, media, postage, or staff search may cost money. Send case-record requests to the responsible clerk, not the county’s general administrative-record route. Administrative judiciary records follow GR31.1. Do not copy exposed Social Security, full account, or driver-license numbers.
Key rules:
General Rule 31 governs court case records.
General Rule 22 protects specified family-law records.
General Rule 31.1 applies to judiciary administrative records.
