Traffic Court Records in Pierce County
Pierce County District Court hears traffic and other infractions within its jurisdiction. Municipal courts handle citations filed under their city authority. Tacoma has its own court. Lakewood also serves Steilacoom and DuPont, Puyallup serves Milton, and Bonney Lake shares a court with Sumner and other communities. University Place routes these matters to District Court. The court printed on the citation controls.
The issuing court keeps the case record. A traffic docket can show the citation or cause number, violation description, response, hearing, court order, disposition, balance, and collection status where public. LINX includes a District infraction search. A payment vendor accepts money but is not necessarily a case-search portal.
Pierce District Infraction Search
Use the LINX District search and select Infraction for a Pierce District citation. Search by cause number when known, or use the last-name and first-name fields with a year span. Infraction coverage includes speeding, photo enforcement, parking, seatbelt, and other civil violations identified by the court.
The county's official infraction page shows the response and hearing routes.

The page ties search, hearing, payment, and missed-deadline steps to the issuing court's process.
Do not begin at the county payment vendor when the goal is a court date or docket. The payment site and phone line serve payment, while LINX and Washington Courts supply search and calendar data. If a new citation is absent, allow for filing lag and call the court shown on the ticket.
How to Look Up a Traffic Ticket
Read the citation before searching. It names the court and gives the identifier needed to route the matter. For District cases, use LINX or Washington Courts Find My Court Date. For a city citation, follow the named municipal court's case-information path. Phone and counter service remain vital when a number has not posted or a city uses a separate vendor or form.
- Find the issuing court and citation or cause number.
- Search LINX District, the statewide court-date tool, or the named municipal route.
- Without the ticket, use the permitted name fields and contact the correct court.
- Call or visit the counter if the citation has not posted or the details conflict.
- Record the response deadline, hearing date, location or mode, and case status.
Pierce County's 30-Day Rule
Pierce District Court instructs a recipient to pay or request a hearing within 30 days. The deadline concerns the response, not merely an online search. A citation that has not appeared in LINX does not extend the time printed on the notice. Contact the court before the deadline if the web record is missing.
Quick answer: Send the chosen response within 30 days and keep proof of delivery or payment.
District Court offers payment, mitigation, contested hearing, and hearing-by-mail routes. Each has a different effect. Forms include Hearing by Mail Request, Good Cause Statement, Officer Subpoena Request, Declaration of Non-Driving, and appeal information.
Finding Your Traffic Court Date
The citation may state a response date rather than a scheduled trial. Confirm the current setting through the issuing court. Washington Courts Find My Court Date uses Court Name, the last name exactly as it appears on the papers, and first-name initial, and may require a CAPTCHA. LINX calendars are regenerated about every two hours, but hearings can change without notice.
| Citation Number | Use the identifier printed on the ticket, shown as citation/cause number. |
|---|---|
| Court | District or the named municipal court that received the citation. |
| Date & Time | The current hearing setting, not just the response deadline. |
| Courtroom | Room, department, or approved remote appearance information. |
| Status | Pending response, set, paid, disposed, continued, or other court notation. |
Mitigation and Contested Hearings
A mitigation hearing admits the violation but permits an explanation and request for a reduction. Pierce County says that outcome cannot be appealed and the infraction is reported to the Department of Licensing. A contested hearing denies the violation and asks the court to decide it. The judgment may be appealable.
For a contested hearing, an officer subpoena request must be made at least seven days before the hearing. A hearing by mail must be requested within 30 days. Pierce County says the written order generally arrives in four to six weeks and is not appealable under that route.
Paying or Contesting a Ticket
Choose the response supported by the official citation and court instructions. District payment is available online, by phone at (253) 590-4452, by mail, or in person. A contested request goes to the issuing court, not the payment vendor. Mitigation is a third route with its own effect. Do not miss the response deadline while comparing choices.
| Paying the Ticket | Contesting the Ticket |
|---|---|
| Resolves the amount through the official court route | Requests a hearing where the court decides the violation |
| Generally due within 30 days for District matters | Request generally due within the same 30-day period |
| Official web, phone, mail, or counter options | Written or other court-approved request to the issuing court |
Missed response or setting: A late response or missed appearance can cause an added fee, Department of Licensing notice, registration consequences, or collections. Contact the issuing court at once and ask for its good-cause or rescheduling process.
Pierce Rescheduling Channels
Ask to reschedule before the original hearing. Pierce District accepts requests through Live Chat, email, phone, or mail, and a mailed request must be postmarked by the original date. A docket entry for a request is not the same as an order granting it. Confirm the new setting.
Local practices differ. Lakewood publishes separate lead times for criminal agreed orders and infraction continuances, and its Monday traffic calendar may be in person or by Zoom. Tacoma posts selected virtual-hearing options. The court's current notice controls appearance mode.
Court Traffic Record vs Driver Record
These are two different government files. The issuing court holds the citation case, docket, hearings, orders, payment entries, and disposition. The Washington Department of Licensing keeps the separate driving record. A court may send disposition information to DOL, but a court docket does not list every licensing action, and a DOL abstract is not a court record.
| Court Traffic Record | Driver Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Kept By | Issuing District or municipal court | Washington Department of Licensing |
| Shows | Citation, settings, response, orders, disposition, and case balance | The separate state licensing history and actions |
| How to Get It | Court search, phone, counter, mail, or copy request | The Department of Licensing's official record route |
Pierce Municipal Traffic Paths
Tacoma Municipal Court handles city traffic, parking, and photo matters. Lakewood covers Lakewood, Steilacoom, and DuPont. Puyallup and Milton share a court with ticket-response, photo-enforcement, payment, and UP Program links. Bonney Lake and Sumner publish their own citation and hearing instructions. Use the city named on the ticket.
Photo, parking, and moving infractions do not have identical consequences. Do not transfer a District rule or fee to a municipal case without checking. Puyallup's UP Program, for example, lists a $35 application fee and a first payment within 30 days, while other courts use different forms and plans.
Fees and Copies
Order a docket, citation, or order from the issuing court. Pierce County Clerk fees apply to its records and should not be treated as a universal municipal schedule. District payment-plan information lists a $10 one-time administrative fee. Ask whether a plain or certified copy is required before ordering.
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| County non-certified copy | $0.50 per page | June 2026 Pierce schedule |
| County certified copy | $5 first page; $1 more per page | Includes Clerk seal |
| County special search | $30 per hour | When staff research is required |
| District payment plan | $10 once | Administrative fee identified by county |
Pierce Payment Safety
Use the official Pierce payment page to confirm the current vendor and phone route. Pierce County identifies Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson for certain delinquent accounts beginning in March 2026. Verify the cause number and court before sending funds.
A receipt proves payment through that channel, not that every docket update is complete. Keep the receipt, then check the court record or call the clerk when a deadline is close. Municipal balances must be paid through the issuing city's approved method.
